Hovering orb over North Beach jetty
Hovering orb // North Beach on Tue 25.10.2011
Last week's swell forecast. Small-ish. Chance of capturing some decent surf shots. Small-ish. Potential of seeing a hovering orb along the Perth coast. Better. I needed to find something to kick start the creative mind! Keep your eyes peeled, you might see some more orbs at landmarks around Western Australia.

It was this good…just over a week ago!! // Spot X on Thu 25.08.2011
Dark clouds hang overhead in Western Australia today…literally and metaphorically. The whole surfing community's thoughts go out to the young bodyboarder taken by a shark near The Farm in Bunker Bay yesterday. It's a time to reflect and make sure that you're getting everything out of life that you can. Live every day to the max!

I've pretty much photographed every possible means of having fun on the water this last week. Short boards, long boards, kite surfing, wind surfing, knee boards and body boards. Just missed out on the SUP's…not that too many people would be disappointed! After weeks of small waves and no wind, a heap of crew were out enjoying the conditions that were tossed up. Lots of smiling faces around the beach!

I'm still recovering from "the big drive" on Monday…both physically and photographically! Up at 2:30am, clocked up around 1,000km seeing most of the South West, then home by 10:30 that night. Ouch! The expected wind and waves didn't hit Spot X (a heaving, ledge of a wave breaking on a shollow reef in the middle of deep water) so we were pretty bummed. No great pics for the sponsors on this trip.

I caught up with Ryland Blakeney for a session down at Floreat Groyne last night and scored more good shots in the first 5 minutes than what we got for the whole day on Monday. A few of the local surf crew were also taking advantage of the increase in swell and protection from the wind. Crazy emerald green water down there at the moment.

It's not a day to be at the beach! Strong, gusty onshore winds, a bit of rain and just a little chilly. There's still some swell kickin' around but I couldn’t find any locations offering protection.

Our fortunes are looking up for tomorrow. An easing swell to around 3 foot and moderate SE winds. The minimum is only going to be 4 degrees. Brass monkey weather! High tide of 1.24m at 7:30am and a low of 0.57m at 5:50am.

I had never considered hiring a photographer to go with me on a surf trip or even for a day at the beach.  In my mind this is only something the pro's would do. I kept asking my wife, Zoe, to come down and take a few photos of me on some waves. I
