Saturday, 24 March 2012 John John Florence (HAW) has taken out the ASP Prime rated Telstra Drug Aware Pro, with Courtney Conlogue (USA) winning the ASP 6-Star Women's event. Western Australia turned it on for the final day of the event with clean 3 - 4 foot surf and perfect clear sunny skies for the surfers and thousands of spectators. Courtney Conlogue (USA) today won the event for the second year in a row. Conlogue's powerful backhand attack is perfectly suited to these powerful South West Oz waves. The young Californian dominated the final against Hawaiian Malia Manuel, posting two scores in the 8-point-range (out of a possible 10), to etch her name on the winners list once again. Another stand out in this year's event was Mark Occhilupo (AUS). Occy was ASP World Champion back in 1999, has twice won this event and although retired from full-time competition, scored a wild card entry. Occhilupo's affinity for Margaret River was clear from day one, with surf fans being treated to watching his iconic style and flair as he progressed through the contest. His dream run ended in the last minute of his semifinal today, when Olamana Eleogram (HAW) posted a 6.50 and took the lead, sending Occhilupo home with an equal 3rd place finish...not bad at all for a 45 year old retired surfer! Sunday, 4th March 2012 West Australian Taj Burrow opened up his 2012 ASP World Championship Tour with the perfect start...a win at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast. Burrow defeated dangerous South American Adriano De Souza (BRA) in a final that came down to the wire. De Souza caught a wave in the dying minutes and launched into a massive air-reverse, requiring a 7.87 out of a possible 10 to take the lead. The judges deliberated until after the siren sounded and when it was announced that De Souza came a mere 0.27 short, Burrow was chaired up the beach and declared the 2012 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast champion. "I feel so good now!" Burrow said. "I had a really good event last year, but came up short in the final against Kelly (Slater). Then today when I found myself against Adriano (De Souza), I was really nervous because he got me in a final in Brazil last year. He's really tough and I don't like competing against him to be honest. There was a lot of weight on my shoulders in that final so it's pretty rewarding to come out on top." The ASP World Championship Tour will head to Victoria next for the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach from 3 - 14 April, stop number 2 of 10 in the race for the 2012 ASP World Title. "I've been going for the ASP World Title for a while now," Burrow said. "I don't know what to say. I just want to surf my best and hope that the rest falls into place. I love Bells. I love throwing on a full wetsuit and doing some big arcs in the Bells Bowl." Thursday, 29th September 2011 Malia Manuel (Hawaii) has narrowly won the ASP 6-Star Billabong Girls Azores Islands Pro defeating our local Perth girl, Felicity Palmateer, in a low scoring final which saw the lead change several times in excellent 3-4ft peaks at Praia de Santa Barbara. Manuel made it back-to-back Star event victories following her win in Pantin, Spain last week to finish off her European campaign in the best possible fashion. In the tactical final where positioning and wave selection proved crucial, it was the young Hawaiian, whose grandfather originated from the Azores Islands, gaining the edge with a solid 6.67 (out of 10) with a series of backhand snaps to take victory. Palmateer claimed her best result of the season with her first final appearance in the 2011 season. The powerhouse goofy footer ripped apart the jacking peaks in her semi-final matchup to enter the final in great form. Unlucky not to latch onto a decent scoring ride, Palmateer has jumped up the Star rankings. "I am really excited and every heat I kept getting through and I am so happy. I haven't had any good results this year so just to make the final has given me a massive confidence boost. I am happy for Malia for winning and qualifying for the tour and happy for myself for getting second. I was sitting out there this morning and I heard the girls were on and it was pumping. It usually doesn't happen like that so I am stoked." Billabong Girls Azores Islands Pro Final Result: Malia Manuel (HAW) 11.90 def. Felicity Palmateer (AUS) 10.40
Billabong Girls Azores Islands Pro Semi-final Results: Heat 1: Felicity Palmateer (AUS) 11.50 def. Rebecca Woods (AUS) 8.50

Tuesday, 31st May 2011 Kai Otton (Northern Beaches, NSW) won the ASP PRIME rated Coca-Cola - Oakley, World Tour event in solid 6 foot (2.5 meter) surf in Itaúna Saquarema, Brazil overnight. In the final, Otton frustrated the passionate Brazilian crowd by beating local Raoni Monterio 15.43 to 14.93 (out of a possible 20). The pair went wave for wave and battled hard, but it was Otton who made the most of what was on offer. Otton pockets USD$40,000 for the victory and more importantly 6500 points, which Otton was in desperate need of after slipping to 56th on the ASP World Rankings after a slower than usual start to the year. The win now moves Otton up to 38th on the ratings and goes along way to helping him keep his coveted spot on the ASP World Title Series. Yadin Nicol (Margaret River, WA) has also received a significant boost on the ASP World Ratings after an equal 3rd place finish in Brazil last night. Nicol defeated Brazilian prodigy Gabriel Medina in the Quarterfinals, but couldn't get past Raoni Monterio in the Semis. Nicol jumps from 39th to 33rd on the ratings and is now only one spot away from a position on the ASP World Title series, a spot that he's has been chasing for years. Australians Lincoln Taylor (QLD) and Adam Robertson (VIC) also took home solid results, securing 5th place Quarterfinal finishes that will also see the pair jump up the ratings. |

Monday, 30th May 2011 Picture this. A beach break with small waves, say 1-2 foot. The banks are a little straight. This is Perth! More specifically.....Trigg! Not the ideal conditions for a Pro Junior surf comp. I wasn't expecting too much but these young frothers blew me away. They were actually making the surf look pretty damn good! Airs, tail slides, 360's...all on waist high waves. New Zealand surfer Matt-Lewis Hewitt claimed victory in the men's final and Phillipa Anderson from Merewether took out the women's. For more info on results and the latest news check out the Chill Pro Junior website. |

Friday, 20th May 2011 Yallingup's Taj Burrow placed runner-up at the Billabong Rio Pro, Barra Da Tijuca, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil after he was defeated by local Brazilian Adriano De Souza in the final 15.63 to 12.17 (out of 20.00). Today's runner-up finish marks Burrow's second such result this season and sees him climb to No. 4 on the ASP World Title ratings. The Billabong Rio Pro is event stop 3 of 11 on the men's ASP World Title Tour featuring the World's Top 33 surfers plus one wildcard. |

Saturday, 9th April 2011 Well it's all done and dusted. Two Americans have taken out the major prizes for the men's and women's events at this year's Margaret River Pro. Floridian, Damien Hobgood, excelled in the small waves in the final against local West Aussie lad Yadin Nicol. Hobgood's experience surfing at the top level showed through with his wave selection and wave count. World Tour rookie Courtney Conlogue defeated fellow Californian Sage Erickson in a see-sawing battle in the women's final which will see her move to No. 1 on the ASP Women’s World Rankings. A little disappointing for the 10,000 strong crowd on the final day to not witness the major drawcard, Kelly Slater, take to the water. Would have thought that he might have a paddle in the "big air" comp! For a full wrap up on results click here |

Friday, 3rd December 2010 A day of highest level junior surfing at Woolamai Beach, Victoria saw Arnette Australian Junior Surfing Champions crowned across four individual divisions, along with seven school team surfing titles. Margaret River's Creed McTaggart set the scene for an awesome day. McTaggart was trailing in 2nd place behind Matt Banting (Port Macquarie) with just a minute remaining in the blue ribbon Under 18 Boy's final when he executed two outstanding aerial moves, scoring a 9.2 and winning the final. Schools teams titles were also surfed and some of the performances were simply outstanding. Oney Anwar (Gold Coast - Palm Beach Currumbin Secondary High School) put on an unbelieveable aerial display scoring two outstanding 9 point plus rides but his all star team fell just short of Victorian pair Mitch Baker and Harrison Mann (both Torquay) who took the win. WA took out the Tag Team final and Creed McTaggart also scooped up the Duke Kahanamoku award. Nice one! Next years event will head further south to Tasmania. Monday, 8th November 2010 Over the weekend the opening event of the Wahu Surfer Grom Comp summer series got underway at Trigg Point. This awesome junior surfing event caters for boys and girls across Australia, from 7 year old micro groms to the bigger under 15 groms. The comp was highlighted by the U15 boys division. Sam Humphry (Wembly Downs) went into the water as the number one seed after his second place finish in last summers Wahu Surfer Grom Comp. His ability to power through forehand turns was impressive posting a 7.33 opening ride. When he locked in a back up wave of 6.73, the WA State Junior Surfing Team Member had claimed the win. Shaun Manners (Margaret River) posed the biggest threat to Humphry when he scored the best wave in the final with a 7.50. However, Manners back up 5.50 was not quite enough to catch the winner finishing in second place. Jack Teague (Mosman Park) surfed excellently to finish in third place ahead of an unlucky Harry McPherson (Mandurah) who just couldn't find the waves he needed to place fourth. In the U15 girls heats, Eliza Greene (Yallingup) was equally impressive on her way to a well earned victory ahead of Dunsborough's Marie Bradley. Ella Massie (Margaret River) also performed well finishing in a very close third ahead of Aleigh-Shae Norton (Secret Harbour). The unique event series now heads to Ocean Grove in Victoria. Coops was only down for the heats on Saturday but the waves at Surfers Point were just perfect 4-5 foot, clean lefts and rights. It's nearly worth paying the entry fee just to surf this break for 20 mins with 2 other guys! Rohan Annesley took out the Men's Open and Felicity Palmateer the Women's Open. The biggest win of the competition though has to go to 12-year old Jack Robinson who won the Pro Junior (under 21 year olds). What a champ! Check out the Margaret River Boardriders Club site for all the results. |
